Our story
If your family is anything like ours, you love hitting the open road during the holidays – whether you’re heading to a game reserve, the mountains, or the seaside.
It’s not just the destination that makes the trip exciting, but also everything you see along the way: rolling hills, winding rivers, trucks, buildings and beautiful landscapes.
That’s why we created Skoert, ek soek… Found it! – a family project by the Lategan family from Johannesburg. We wanted a fun way for children (and parents) to get to know our country and its provinces better.
While doing schoolwork with our kids, mom Elizabeth realised children don’t really know South Africa’s provinces anymore. And of course, we all know how often children complain about being bored on long trips. What if they looked up from their screens for just a moment and discovered the world around them with fresh eyes?
What began as a simple Excel list of Kruger National Park animals turned into hours of fun and soon grew into this book, filled with fascinating facts about each province, its landmarks, natural wonders, and things to spot along the way. It became a true passion project, created with my children’s help, and it turned into a very special team effort.
Each of our kids added their own spark:
- Eward (12), our car enthusiast, designed the car-bingo games and helped to make the layout of the book practical and family-friendly.
- Willem (10), a rugby fan, suggested rules for car-rugby and helped us create a proper scorecard for the ever-popular car-cricket.
- Elfriede (8) dreamed up a travel companion, and so Dash the meerkat was born! She insisted Dash should have his own travel bag, and it was Eward’s bright idea to kit him out with colourful shirts. Each shirt matches the colour of a province, making the book fun and easy for younger children to use while helping them hone their planning skills.
